Historical clothing is often admired for its beauty, yet the craftsmanship that gives it shape is rarely seen.
Heirloom Darlings invites visitors to look beneath the finished garment—to discover the underpinnings, pattern drafting, tools, and construction techniques that transform cloth into clothing. Working in miniature allows each layer to be examined individually, revealing details that might otherwise remain hidden.
Rather than presenting a timeline of fashion, this exhibition explores historical dress as an act of making. Every stitch, seam, and carefully chosen fabric reflects the ingenuity of the dressmakers who came before us and the ongoing process of learning through craft.
My hope is that visitors leave with a greater appreciation for the quiet engineering behind historical clothing and the enduring value of making things by hand.
ABOUT THE ARTIST - HANNAH RAMEY:
Hand making runs deep in my family. My grandmother, aunt, and mother all sewed, and my earliest creative memories are of summers spent crafting at my grandmother’s home in Kentucky. One of my favorite early projects was making a quilt for my American Girl doll.
My mother created dresses, quilts, dance costumes, and bags for my sister and me, while my Aunt—who holds a master’s degree in Home Economics—embodied the tradition of making as both skill and scholarship. That legacy continued when my cousin, Sweet Caroline, introduced me to her "Felt Wee-Folks", sparking years of miniature “Wee” doll making.
In 2020, I created my first Heirloom Darling using remnants from my 18th-century living history kit. From that point forward, I committed to a journey through history—creating dolls, garments, and accessories researched and constructed to be as historically accurate as possible at miniature scale.
Each piece honors generations of hand making and the belief that small things can carry great stories.
Creative Arts Guild Gallery Openings + Artist Receptions typically take place on the first Friday evening of each month from 5:30-7:00pm. They give the public the first opportunity to view and purchase from the latest exhibits in Gallery FIVE20 and Gallery ONE11, as well as the opportunity for viewers to speak with exhibiting artists and curators. Gallery Openings are always free, family-friendly, and open to all. Activities for kids and refreshments are available.
